You Don't Have to Go Through This Alone
Civil Court vs. Criminal Court
- You are in control. Unlike criminal cases where the state drives the process, civil cases are survivor-led. You decide how far to take it.
- Lower burden of proof. Civil cases only require showing it is “more likely than not”, not “beyond a reasonable doubt.”
- No police report needed. You can pursue a civil claim even if you never reported the assault to law enforcement.
- Third-party accountability. We can pursue employers, institutions, and organizations who enabled or ignored the abuse.
- Privacy protected. We can file using initials or pseudonyms. Most cases resolve confidentially.
Types of Cases We Handle
Workplace Sexual Harassment
Hostile work environments, quid pro quo harassment, and retaliation by employers or supervisors.
Medical Provider Abuse
Sexual misconduct by doctors, therapists, nurses, or other healthcare professionals in a clinical setting.
Institutional Sexual Assault
Assault by staff, coaches, or administrators at schools, universities, or youth organizations.
Rehab & Treatment Centers
Assault or exploitation at rehab facilities, sober homes, or group living environments.
Rideshare Assault (Uber/Lyft)
Sexual assault by a rideshare driver or enabled by negligent driver screening practices.
Assault by Someone You Know
Most assaults occur between people who know each other. Previous consent does not mean consent was given on the occasion in question.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to file a police report to pursue a civil case?
No. You do not need a police report or criminal conviction to file a civil lawsuit. Many survivors never reported to law enforcement and still won in civil court.
Can I file if it happened years ago?
Possibly yes. California has special laws that extend the deadline for survivors. The statute of limitations depends on when the assault occurred, your age at the time, and other factors.
What if I was drinking or impaired at the time?
You cannot legally consent while intoxicated. This does not disqualify your claim. In fact, many perpetrators deliberately exploit intoxication or vulnerability.
Will my name be made public?
We take every step to protect your privacy, including filing under initials or a pseudonym. Most cases resolve confidentially. You control if and when you speak publicly.
What if I don't remember everything clearly?
Memory gaps are a common trauma response. We can build a strong case using medical records, witness statements, timelines, and expert testimony. You don’t need a perfect memory.
How much does it cost to hire Betts Law Group?
Nothing upfront. We work on contingency, meaning we only get paid if we win your case or reach a settlement. No recovery means no fee. Ever.
